[The news of his sister’s engagement came as unexpected to Mithos, even though it probably shouldn’t have. Raine has been with Jack since before he had even been born; he’s known the man his entire life. He’s always accepted it as the norm, and despite the over-protectiveness he harbors for his one and only sister, he entrusts her wellness to the strange, strange man. But getting married is always a big deal, isn’t it? The supposedly unbreakable bonds of marriage have always been part of an odd, grey area in their family, marred by the conspicuous absence of a father Mithos never knew. But whom Raine had known. He just wants to make sure his family is in good hands.]

Jack,

I trust you to take good care of Raine. She’s my only sister, and she deserves to have all the happiness in the world. You’ve done fairly well these past nearly fifteen years that I’ve watched, and even before then, but that doesn’t mean you can start slacking off anytime soon.

[A short while after relaying this message, he can be found all about the village plaza. The mission: find something that suitably says “Congratulations, beloved sister of mine, you’re getting married!”, and within the budget of his slim allowance. There is no tradition that dictates such a thing, but he feels it’s necessary anyway. Feel free to run into him at any point on his trip, which includes the flower shop, the clothing store, and the general item shop, as well as on the way from and back to Community Housing 2. Of course, he’ll stop and rest by the fountain at some point too.]

Obviously. [And once he realizes how bluntly that come out, he'll add:] ... I needed some fresh air.

[Ouch, bro.] Got a lot on your mind?

Just some unexpected news. From Raine. [But because he doesn't know if Raine told Mithos or not, he'll keep it shrouded. If Mithos was told, he'll know what Yuan's referring to.]

So she told you, then. ...I was really surprised too.

[Oh good, Yuan wasn't the only one who was surprised.] I can't help but wonder why he proposed after all this time.

[It did seem strange, after so many years. But Mithos believes in Jack, or at least strongly wants to; this would be good for Raine.]

...Maybe he finally realized that he should take responsibility. [His eyes don't quite meet Yuan directly, realizing how...odd? uncomfortable? ironic? it is to discuss something like that with him of all people.]

[Ouch. Ouch. Yeah, now Yuan definitely has no right to complain about Jack anymore.]

... It's never too late for that. [He sounds mildly bitter, admitting that.]

[He's the one who should be bitter. How can Yuan say that while still keeping his distance and shirking his own responsibility? You know what, he will go ahead and be bitter.] You could have fooled me.

Then apparently, Jack's a braver man than I am.

[It isn't until after he blurted that out that he fully realizes what he just said. Crap, he just indirectly admitted that he's a weakling who's a little afraid of trying to get close to his family again.]

... I mean... [... He's got nuttin'.]

[It takes a moment to process what Yuan means by that. Nothing about him makes sense. What does bravery have to do with it? It's a simple matter of whether or not he cares about them enough. If he's saying that he isn't brave...then what is he? Cowardly?]

...What is there to be afraid of? [He sounds incredulous more than anything.]

[The face Mithos is making right now is definitely one of the things to be afraid of. It's just making Yuan feel worse about what he did. That's not something he'll openly admit, of course.]

Nobody said anything about being afraid. I was just- For Jack to swallow his pride like that- [NO YUAN that just made things worse!]

Forget it. [He turns and tries to keep walking. Which is an insanely optimistic move of him, because he knows perfectly well Mithos won't drop the issue and let him leave like this.]

[Can't let you do that, Yuan. He follows, trying to keep in step with his brother. His eyes stay fixed on Yuan's, demanding explanation.]

No, I'm not going to just "forget it". I don't get you. You're my brother and I hardly know the first thing about you.

[He stops walking again and turns to face Mithos, crossing his arms.]

Then what do you want to know?

[He stops short, surprised. He had expected Yuan to brush him off again; give a few brusque words and keep going. Absentmindedly fiddling with the flowers again, he wonders. What doesn't he want to know? Of course there's the big overarching question, but what if he doesn't like the answer? It would be so much easier if he didn't care, if he could just say "forget it" and walk off. His heart is a little too soft for that. It retains everything. He can't just cut pieces out, toss them over his shoulder, and move on like nothing happened. He stops fidgeting with his hands. A breath.]

...Why?

[He's sure he already knows what Mithos meant, but he wants to hear it from the boy's own mouth. Not that it'll make any difference. It'll hardly buy Yuan any more time to come up with an answer, either. He just dances around it out of reflex, in hopes that Mithos may drop the issue anyway and ask something simpler. Like Yuan's hobbies, or his favorite color. That would be so much easier.]

[That expression and tone of voice are far from encouraging, and he almost changes his mind about asking, but there's no turning back now. The question comes out quietly:]

Why did you stop caring about us?

[He hopes he doesn't regret this. Growing up, as soon as he had been old enough to grasp at the situation, he had come to assume that the reason their father had left was because Mom had been pregnant with him. That's the story he gleaned from the timing of things. After figuring that out is when he vowed to do his best to protect Mom and Raine all by himself. Make it as though they weren't missing anything. Yuan had skipped out on them not too long after their father, so in a way that was because of him as well. But why should he accept blame for anything, when he did nothing wrong?]

I didn't.

[It would've been convenient if he had. Then he wouldn't feel so damn bad about it, in retrospect. But he still cares about his family and that's why he's keeping his distance- to avoid intruding on their happiness. He didn't deserve any of that, himself, and he'd probably just ruin things anyway.]

[He expected almost everything but that answer. It doesn't fit in with what he thought he knew all these years.]

If you cared about Mom and Raine you would be there for them. You wouldn't have abandoned them in the first place!

[Mithos has a point. Yuan really can't deny that. Even so, that's not entirely what catches his attention. He shifts his stance, still gazing down at Mithos.]

What about you? You don't feel I abandoned you as well?

[A look of surprise flits across his face, before vanishing into concealment. He overcompensates with the indignant expression that follows.]

...Mom and Sis are the ones you hurt. I'm just looking out for them, since you obviously won't. [...That's right, he has to be strong for them, because they need him.]

... A young boy shouldn't have to be the one to look after his mother and sister.

[That's what he believed when he was young. It's the father's duty to watch over them. And that's why he's watching over his own family, now. He won't make the same mistake his father made, or the same mistake he himself made when he was young.]

Who else is there to do it? I'm not that young; I'll be 15 soon enough. [....yeah, impressive.]

It's not like age matters anyway. I'm more responsible than you or dad ever were.

[But Yuan was around the age of fifteen when he flounced, and therein lies the difference. He refused to pick up the pieces his father left behind out of sheer anger, while Mithos feels obligated to pick up the pieces.]

... Fair enough. Then I'll trust you to keep looking after them. [And he'll try to leave again.]

[He lets him leave this time. A part of him is angry with his brother for continuing to walk away; another part of him just hurts. He doesn't want their relationship to be like this, but there's nothing that can be done to change it until Yuan changes.]

You don't have to tell me - I'll keep looking after them anyway! [So take that.]
