thirteen [voice/action/just terrible]
[Mid-morning is drawing near, and the house is too quiet. Martel should have been awake already. Despite the uncertainty that has settled heavily between him and his sister, there are plenty of things Mithos does still know about her, and this is definitely out of the ordinary. Softly, he knocks at her door. No reply. With a knot of worry tightening in his stomach, he carefully pushes the door open to look inside and...
He's greeted by an empty room. No sister, none of her personal possessions. No sign that anyone had ever occupied this space. Only one conclusion sits at the end of this equation. Numbness overtakes his body and heart. Desperate, his mind fights against the truth; he runs for his journal and hastily, shakily, flips it open.]
[VOICE - filtered to Martel | filter VOIDED]
Martel? Martel! Where are--
[--He stops. The filter isn't working. She can't hear this. His journal falls from his hands and the feed ends. The chilling realization that she's gone pierces him as suddenly as the first time she was taken from him. Classic vertigo. He doesn't know how to breathe properly. He forgets how to stand on two feet and slowly crumples to the floor. He doesn't fall to pieces; that would imply that there's something left to break. Whatever remains is quickly grinding to dust. He lets it out, the pain that's rapidly smothering him from the inside. But no matter how much he diffuses, there's still more to take its place.]
[ACTION - AFTERNOON]
[He's scraped himself up off the floor (for now) and run out of tears (for now), and he needs someone to blame. Anyone. He doesn't care. The only truth of the world: Martel is gone, and he deserves compensation for his loss. Everyone owes him something, and he owes them retribution. Mithos prowls the village, looking for any and all opportunities to inflict some of his own pain on a scapegoat.
Later, when he's exhausted his body but his hurt and rage continue to burn, when he's hit the point where he can't feel any emptier, he reaches for the journal again. It's all he can think to do.]
[VOICE - filtered to Kaori| 100%]
...Can I come see you?
[ooc: For my own sake, chronologically the threads flow as follows: Frey, Nephry/Dist, Jeb, Silver, Grune/Dhaos, Kratos, Kaori.]

[action]
It is a very hard swallow that beats down her rising panic. She keeps her eyes on Mithos' face, not his weapon. But what do you even say to this?
...Something in a calm and steady voice, certainly. Something that Nephry knows is a blatant lie, but might get him to at least desist with the sword.]
I apologize if I was in your way.
[action]
Do you really think apologies can undo anything? It's completely meaningless. [Just like everything else. Does anything matter anymore? How can it?]
[action]
[Her gaze is as steady as his sword.]
[action]
Another swell of pain. He raises his sword. Strangely, he isn't in a hurry. He wants to be able to see this human's suffering. The edge of the blade will come diving toward her in 3, 2....]
[action]
[Nephry knows better than to let him stab her. Despite the throbbing in her ankle she gets up and out of the way.]
[action]
[action]
[action]
[action]
Let me go. [There is no please. Nephry doesn't beg.]
[action]
[action]
I haven't done anything to you.
[action]
[action]
That does two things at once - knocks her into a coughing fit and convinces her that anywhere but here is the best place to be. She's going to scramble as well as she can to her feet. And try to run.]
[action]
[action]
Attacked.
Dist's eyes fly open, and anything that was in his hands is dropped, as he rushes forward. His mind is a flurry of emotion - shock, fear, rage - but the prior two are pushed aside in favor of his fury. Dist's anger fuels him. How dare this...this insect put a sword to someone he cherishes! Dist isn't going to let anyone take his precious people away. Never again, ever! No one will lay a finger on them so long as he's still alive.
Dist has his gun in his hands before he even realizes it. He can't even remember pulling it from inside his coat, not even aiming. All he knows is that he just needs to either kill or incapacitate Nephry's attacker. ...No, that's not right. Dist wants him dead. Writhing in pain as he slowly bleeds out, that's what this person deserved.
Dost pulls the trigger, firing a bullet of searing hot fifth fonons at Mithos. He was aiming for his wing, but Dist wasn't a great shot to begin with. Plus, with him running, the bullet's trajectory will veer off, and strike Mithos' forearm, close to his shoulder instead.]
[action]
Something comes in from one side to strike Mithos, and when she turns to look, she almost falls over again. Saphir. Relief and worry play tag on her face, because it's someone she knows, and yet the one least likely to be able to do anything about it, at least without his fontech machines.
Then again, he does seem to have something up his sleeve. With one leg unable to hold any weight, Nephry does her best to just stay upright, trying to come up with some way to get both of them...no, all of them out of this.]
[action]
[action]
The force of the tackle, and the fall - damn those blasted wings - takes the breath out of Dist's lungs, and he's left gasping for a few seconds. No, no! No, no, no, he's not going to let this urchin get the upper hand on him! Dist forces his way through the pain, practically snarling and using his size and weight to hopefully overpower the boy.
If he can just throw him off...pin him down, and get his hands around that scrawny, pencil neck. Or, better yet, shove the barrel of his gun down this child's throat...!]
[action]
[That? That was almost desperate. It doesn't matter that he has some kind of weapon, she doesn't want him to get hurt.]
Don't hurt him! [Of course she's talking to Mithos. She's ready to do something about it (isn't she?) if she has to. How can this one small boy do so much damage?]
[action]
[action]
The pain makes Dist not only cry out, but loosen the grip on his gun, dropping it entirely.]
Aagh--! You...you filthy little dog! I'll...I'll turn you inside out! [He gasps, tears stinging in his eyes. Thankfully, some of the adrenaline numbs the pain, but not all of it. Even still, Dist manages to get his uninjured hand on Mithos' sword arm, keeping it at bay for as long as his strength holds out.]
[action]
- That monster will kill him... -
...And then, likely, her.
- Saphir, no! -
Did she say it aloud, just now? She doesn't know. What she does know is that it was only a few steps to pick up the gun, she didn't even feel the pain of them, and turn it around in her hands.
Not to shoot. Her hands were shaking too badly and even if they weren't - but she's not thinking, is she? In the same breath as that possible shout she's raising the gun in her hands to bring it down on the back of Mithos's head.
And her chest constricts, in pain, and she falls again. Missed. Missed, and for now she can't manage to get up again. Will Mithos know that? She forces herself to look, to make sure Saphir isn't...]
[action]
Then--
Nephry's attempt does not connect, but he can feel the weapon moving through the air behind him. It's reflex, instinct: his head turns.]
[action]
If that succeeds, Dist will scramble to his feet and go to Nephry. However, he's not aiming to check on her just yet. Not when there's still a threat involved. Oh, no. He wants his gun back. He wants his gun back and he wants to blow whatever's inside this boy's head out through the back of his skull.]
