[Martel was back. And regardless of whatever selfishness Sayo had scraped up within her, one thing was sure—she was undeniably happy that she'd returned. Mithos is happy. His sister is here. Of course, she had half-prepared herself weeks prior to this possibility.
He couldn't stay forever, Sayo. You knew this.
She smiles softly to herself, tying the knot atop a boxy frame in the kitchen. Lunch. She's... going to miss making three plates; when Mithos returns to the room, Martel still away--putting things away more than likely--
she turns and smiles, masking the bittersweetness of it like she was so criminally good at.]
Everything almost ready, Mithos?
[She doesn't motion to the lunches tied on the counter. Just two of them. But her hand rests gently on one as she speaks, sounding content with herself.]
Your leg isn't bothering you, is it? I know you've been moving around a lot this morning...
[Martel wouldn't let him help too much with packing up, constantly fretting about his leg. And he didn't protest too much, because he will never be too old to appreciate being taken care of by her. It also gave him the opportunity to spend his last moments with Sayo alone. Having both of them in the same apartment was strange enough, never mind in the same room. Two worlds that should never touch - family, and... Well, he still isn't sure what to think of Sayo. The human who broke all the rules to become the exception.
Mithos knew he would leave some day. He just didn't know that day would come so soon. Of course he's happy to have Martel by his side again. Happier than he had been, anyway, because he can't help but think that he still doesn't remember what 'happy' really feels like. But...he doesn't know. Something about the idea of leaving Sayo behind...]
Almost... [she doesn't have to gesture to them - he's already spotted the lunches. A quiet pang somewhere deep inside. Bittersweetness must be catching.]
My leg is fine. [even after the time they've spent together, he still can't branch out beyond simple replies to her questions. Something still holds him back from letting go and being himself. Old habits die hard.]
It's true. I... got really careless, and Freyjadour was kind enough to... let me be around anyway. He didn't want me to die. [There was a hint of awe and disbelief in her voice despite her efforts to hide it. She had been under the impression that she would never again come to like Humans for all the treacherous things they had done, but here was this man who continued to prove that he wasn't like the other Humans of her world. That, in addition to the kindness of the other people while she was a small child.
She couldn't lie to them, Mithos, or even herself. She would never be able to.]
[He doesn't understand where the promise comes in, or why that makes him her brother...something as special to Mithos as the bond between siblings... It doesn't make sense. More and more, a pit of uncertainty opens up inside of him, threatening to swallow him whole.]
But he's still a human...
[turn back turn back turn back...] You...would trust him, because of that?
((OOC: The following is a continuation of THIS, for the curious! And also Kath herself because work ate her brain. :P))
Your sister... [Martel. Jeb knows how important Martel is to Mithos, but he can only imagine how that must have felt...] Oh, Mithos. I'm sorry the Malnosso did that to you. That's going too far...
It hurt, seeing her but knowing that I was no closer to having her with me. [He remembers throwing everything he could find at the mirror, watching it shatter so he wouldn't have to catch his reflection in it anymore.]
Silver, stop! [Arms out wide as he stands in front of Mithos protectively.] I don't want anyone to get hurt. Me getting slapped is nothing, not when I've gone through worse. I wouldn't want Mithos to hurt you either, so please don't hurt him!
[Mithos might have a little help with that trying to stay afloat bit. Frey's grabbing blindly for him, and if he does get a hand on him he'll be pulling him along as he kicks to stay above water and try to get to shore.] Are- [Cough. Salt water in his mouth.] Are you alright?!
[The moment Mithos stops walking, Kratos stops as well. He can't help but glance down at the boy in concern, despite the bad blood between them. Which rumor has him so worked up?]
He's happy to follow, wondering if sleep might come more painlessly if he has her by his side. She makes it easier to forget everything that's wrong. He does worry about Sayo, back at the apartment without him, but...he thinks he needs to be right here.] ...I didn't hurt your wings too badly, did I?
[Sayo's more or less better from her problems earlier on. Life was... getting back to the way things were. Less of that mental strife that plagued her; she realized after waking up that she was okay. The past was painful, but she was okay.
[He had been sitting in the living room, not far outside the door to her weaving room, just listening to the quiet rhythm of the loom, the fabric, her hands. It's a comforting song. When it stops, he's pulled from his meditations - always trying to beat the emptiness away any way he can, but it's never far behind, ready to puncture him with jagged teeth.
Then her question leaves him staring in confusion.]
...The beach? [That's right...hadn't they talked about going back? It feels like a long time ago, before Martel was lost, before Kaori slipped through his fingers.]
[The elf that seemed to have decided Freyjadour was his to watch had insisted upon him delivering at least one gift today. Putting it all until last minute was no good, wasn't it?
The problem was the gift in particular was one he couldn't get caught delivering. It was a simply wrapped present that he planned to leave on Mithos' doorstep after knocking, then quickly leave before he answered--
Planned, being the key word. Rather then being silent about it as he'd planned, he lets out a rather loud, pained yell as the small elf jumps up to dangle from his braid in a fit of mischievous curiosity.] You're pulling out my hair!
[Mithos has had his hands full with his own elf. After the first one refused to leave him alone, showering him with incessant requests to bake cookies and make paper snowflakes, he thought killing it would be the quickest solution. Then a new elf popped up. It was destroyed and replaced again within the hour. This one was a little twitchy and bizarrely fixated on Mithos's hair - it kept insisting that he fashion holiday decorations from locks of it. At this point, he resorted to locking the elf in the closet, but it always seems to find a way out.
He's flinging the elf back into the closet for the hundredth time when he hears the loud yell from outside. He doesn't get a chance to shut the door on his strange little tormentor because he's turning to tensely listen. Someone is at his front door, and they shouldn't be. He stalks over, hand ready on Kaori's knife where it waits at his waist, and he carefully pulls the door open.
Surprise flashes across his face when he sees that it's Freyjadour, but it's quickly replaced by vexation.] What are you doing here?
[Jeb had woken up extra early that morning--half because of what he was about to do and half because he had been stirred into consciousness by a little kitten tongue licking his face. However, when he had gotten dressed and started sneaking out the door, he found that his new companion wouldn't stop following him. Even feeding her didn't seem to make her happy. He didn't want her mewls to wake Silver up, so he picked her up and wrapped her in couple of towels...
Now the kitten (named "Marie" if her nametag was any indication, which made Jeb happy and sad at the same time) was bundled under one arm and a present was bundled under the other. Approaching Mithos' home, he felt more and more anxious. This was... probably a really bad idea. But he had come this far, so when he got to his destination he placed the present at the doorstep, knocking a little before turning to walk away.]
Okay, there we go... ["Mew."] No, Marie. I wish we could stay, but I know we're not going to be welcomed. ["Meeew."] Let's go home now, okay? I can introduce you to Silver and his Pokemon. [And he's off.]
[His door is never knocked on. Which is why he approaches it warily, his mind loudly buzzing with questions, his hand poised on the handle of his knife. He pulls the door open with a threatening glare.
...To see a familiar back walking away. He already wasn't in the mood for this. He's never in the mood for this, but waking up to an unwanted present from the Malnosso has his temper frayed and unfurled.] Why did you come here?
[In the middle of the night, Jeb bolts up in his bed. His body shakes, gripping the sheets. A nightmare. He had a another nightmare about Tori and Michiru. He hears Marie mew at him from the foot of his bed, and he smiles.] Hey... [He puts his glasses on before giving her a reassuring pet.] It's okay, Marie. I'm all right.
[He glances over to his journal. He doesn't want to bother Silver yet again, so he decides to contact someone else. Before he fully realizes it, it's Mithos he's contacting.]
Mi...thos... Mithos? Are you awake? Sorry if I'm waking you up with this...
[He stirs from his sleep, confused about who could be talking to him, half left behind in a dream he already doesn't remember. It takes a moment to realize that the voice is coming from his journal, and he clumsily grabs it from the nightstand.]
Jeb...? [His voice is groggy, and he tries to rub the sleep from his eyes.] What is it? Did something happen?
[Aleos had recognized quite a few of the names on the list the Malnosso had released, and though he was still relatively new he couldn't stop the worry that filled him with the thought of all those people being sent out to fight. And he had to stay behind, just like back home...
He wasn't going to let his friends go out there without sharing some of his concerns.] Mithos... B-... be careful out there. Please.
[Ice crystals condensing in his veins. Aleos... One of the many “friends” he had made while naïve and stupidly free. Someone who didn’t care that he’s a half-elf, someone who accepted him – he was...he wasn’t human either, was he? He hadn’t said, but Mithos had wondered, and he wonders again now. He thinks about ignoring the message, because he can’t trust his memories. They are mirages that will fade as soon as he reaches out to try to touch them, he is sure of it.
But then...he can’t allow Aleos to believe in a delusion that does not exist; he must excise him immediately. He replies. The picture in the journal will show a face that is not quite as young as the one Aleos remembers, and his voice is not only deeper but colder.]
I do not intend to let those inferior beings [--because he can have his Cruxis Crystal, he can be perfection he can leave everything else behind--] get the better of me. Such concerns are unnecessary and insulting.
Then I'll do what I can. [She kneels beside the two injured, assuming that Mithos' expression was from his wounds as she assesses their condition. It would take some effort to heal them both fully...]
I might not be able to heal them both in full, at least not at once. Mithos will be treated first because of the severity. Is that all right?
[Jeb knows Mithos is back. Jeb has known for a while, having checked the journals for familiar names, familiar contacts. It's only now that Jeb has gathered the courage to contact Mithos, for two reasons--one, he knows things have always been rocky between them, and two, he doesn't even know if it's the "same" Mithos. His hand shakes as he writes the message. He just... has to do his best.]
Mithos,
It's Jeb. If this is the same Mithos I knew, I'm sure I'm someone you don't want to hear from. I'm sorry. But if this is the same Mithos I knew, I just wanted to tell you how relieved I am that you returned to Luceti. You once told me that you had no world to return to.
